How do we make it – Badabon Harvest’s Turmeric Powder

Story of Badabon Harvest Turmeric Powder

In the lush landscapes of the Sundarbans, where the land meets the sea and the air is filled with the melodies of nature, lies a village called Gorankati. This village is home to a dedicated group of farmers known as the Gorankati Joiba BFIG. These 18 farmers, united by their passion for sustainable agriculture, embarked on a remarkable journey that would lead to the creation of Badabon Harvest Turmeric Powder.

The Beginning

Supported by the Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), a Kolkata-based NGO committed to conservation and community development, Badabon Farmer Producer Company Limited (BFPCL) was established. The vision was clear: empower local farmers, promote sustainable practices, and protect the fragile ecosystem of the Sundarbans.

The Land and Its People

In the village of Gorankati, under the Gopalgunj Gram Panchayet, within the Kultali Block of South 24 Parganas, the fertile soil and unique climatic conditions were perfect for cultivating turmeric. The Gorankati Joiba BFIG, with their deep-rooted knowledge and commitment to organic farming, took on the challenge with enthusiasm.

Cultivation

During the months of April to July, the farmers carefully planted the turmeric rhizomes in the rich, alluvial soil. Understanding that turmeric is a long-duration crop, requiring nine months to reach maturity, they meticulously nurtured each plant. Using organic compost and natural pest repellents, they ensured that the plants grew healthy and strong, free from chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Harvesting

After nine months of dedicated care, the turmeric plants were ready for harvest. The farmers of Gorankati Joiba BFIG harvested the turmeric by hand, a practice that has been passed down through generations. Each rhizome was cleaned, boiled, and dried under the golden sun, preserving its vibrant color and potent aroma.

Transformation into Turmeric Powder

The dried turmeric rhizomes were then ground into a fine powder using traditional stone mills. This method, though labor-intensive, retained the natural oils and rich flavors of the turmeric, ensuring that Badabon Harvest Turmeric Powder was of the highest quality.
